PARALLAX, Session 1: The po-boy

Scene setup

I am using scene setup tables from Rogue Handler.

The first step is to decide how much your character knows at the beginning of the adventure. Lawrence is a medical examiner, so the most likely hook is a body coming his way, so I choose 01-20 Victim => Lawrence knows only of the victim.

Operation Details (from random tables)

Victim
I choose paramedic, as I don't feel like bringing in some 3-lettered agency right now.
Deed
[D100]: [39] => Manslaughter
Means
[D100]: [2] => Handgun
Motive
[D100]: [82] => Religious Revelation
Unnatural element
[D100]: [93] => Great Old Ones

Wednesday, October 12th, 1995. 9:48 a.m.

It’s a gray, rain-slicked morning in New Orleans. The humidity is thick enough to chew. Jo swings into my office, the smell of wet pavement trailing behind her.

Jo: "Hey, Law. You look bored. I brought you something to wake you up."

Lawrence: "Careful, Jo. Your 'toys' usually come in body bags. Not much to be thankful for there."

Jo: "Ungrateful bastard. The meat wagon is dropping him off now. The paramedics are taking it hard—he was one of theirs."

Lawrence: "Another 'accident' on the clock?" Jo nods grimly. "The city just keeps giving. Give me the brief."

Location Roll: Average + Sleep
Action Roll: Attain + Fear
My interpretation: A call for panic attack from a nondescript motel

Jo: "Frankie Baptiste, 30. Paramedic out of Big Charity. About three hours ago, they get a call from a dive motel in the Quarter. Night clerk reports a guest, Colleen Kaminski, 23, having a massive panic attack. Baptiste and his partner, Jackie LaRoux, respond. Here’s her version of the nightmare."

Appearance roll: Innocent + Sinister
Character Action roll: Care + Loyal
My interpretation: an innocent looking girl with a sinister tattoo is in need of medical care. Her loyal dog is on the scene
Object roll: Cold + Familiar
Creature roll: Object + Humanoid
My interpretation: a tattoo of a half fish, half human familiar shape

Jo: "They find a girl, maybe early 20s. Looks like a saint, but she’s got this sinister ink on her left forearm that LaRoux couldn't stop staring at. A familiar but wrong shape—half-man, half-fish, holding a strange object. The girl is deep in the throes of a breakdown, babbling about a 'revelation' her god showed her. She’s got a dog in the room, too. Big mutt, fiercely loyal, wouldn't stop growling at the uniforms."

Action Roll: Fierce + Move
My interpretation: Suicide attempt

Jo: "When they moved in to sedate her, she pulled a piece. Pointed it right at her own head. Baptiste lunged to disarm her—total hero move—but the gun went off in the scuffle. Caught him square in the chest. The girl bolted with the dog while LaRoux was busy trying to keep Baptiste’s heart beating. She couldn't bring him back."

Lawrence: "Dying while trying to save the person killing you. Shitty way to go. Alright, GSW to the chest. I’ll start the autopsy now and get you the paperwork ASAP. Though it sounds like a closed book."

Jo: "Think you can finish by lunch? There’s a new po-boy shop two blocks over I’ve been eyeing."

Lawrence: "It’s a deal. Get out of here so I can work."
